Safe, Ethical, Effective: Charleston County Schools Enforce AI Guidelines and Screen Time Limits

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Charleston County Schools

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an integral part of everyday life, and the Charleston County School District is actively exploring how this technology can be used in educational settings. As AI becomes more accessible to students, the district is working to define its role in classrooms while ensuring that its use aligns with educational goals and ethical standards.

Under the current guidelines, teachers are encouraged to use generative AI tools for academic work, but there are clear boundaries. AI cannot be the sole basis for high-stakes decisions such as disciplinary actions, special education placements, or major academic outcomes. This approach aims to prevent over-reliance on AI and ensure that critical thinking remains a central part of student learning.

Daniel Prentice, the chief financial officer for the district, emphasized the importance of creating a structured framework for AI use. “This work will really help us understand what restrictions and which standardization efforts need to occur to make sure that any access to AI follows those policies and is not just a wide open landscape,” he said.

Balancing Technology and Education

While AI offers potential benefits, educators are also concerned about its impact on learning. Middle school teacher and Director of the Charleston Teacher Alliance, Jody Stallings, noted that many students are using AI as a shortcut rather than a tool for critical thinking. “Most of the teachers I know are actually going back to pencil and paper because so many students have started to use AI as a way to work around writing as a critical thinking tool and work around writing as a tool to communicate,” she said.

The district is taking a proactive approach by focusing on responsible and thoughtful engagement with AI. Teachers are being encouraged to use AI to support instruction, such as developing curriculum-aligned content. However, the goal is to ensure that AI does not replace critical thinking or interfere with effective teaching. “Students should be aware of how it can be used and then when they enter the workforce after they leave Charleston County School District have an awareness and an understanding of how to leverage those tools since it’s become so prevalent in society,” Prentice explained.

Educating Educators and Students

A key part of this process involves educating teachers about the proper use of AI. Stallings highlighted the need for caution, stating, “We have to be aware of how they’re using it. Are they using it the correct way? Are they using it in a way that’s actually going to damage their learning?” She added that teachers must remain vigilant and informed about the implications of AI in the classroom.

In addition to educating teachers, the district is also engaging with students and parents. The goal is to create a comprehensive plan that addresses the concerns of all stakeholders. “Teachers are telling us and what we’re telling the district is slow down, go slow. We don’t want the kids to be guinea pigs in some sort of experiment. We want to make sure that what we’re doing is going to be in the students’ best interest,” Stallings said.

Moving Forward with Caution

The district is currently auditing AI usage and reviewing screen time to determine the best approach. Stallings urged a cautious pace, saying, “Until they get to that point where it can genuinely be a tool to produce work or to expedite work rather than a shortcut to answers on a test, let’s slow down.”

As the district continues to refine its guidelines, it plans to implement a clear policy on the role of AI in the classroom by the next school year. This includes controlling access to AI applications both within school buildings and at home. “We can continue to control access just like we filter content now; we can filter access to AI applications both on a Charleston County School District computer in a Charleston County School District building and, when a student takes that device home on their parents’ network, we can control what they can access through that device,” Prentice said.

Conclusion

The Charleston County School District is committed to ensuring that AI is used responsibly and ethically in schools. By balancing technological advancements with traditional teaching methods, the district aims to prepare students for a future where AI plays a significant role. Through ongoing collaboration with teachers, students, and parents, the district is working to create a safe and effective learning environment that fosters critical thinking and responsible use of technology.
