Michael Richards Makes Surprise Appearance After Two-Year Hiatus

Michael Richards Makes Rare Public Appearance After Two Years

Michael Richards, best known for his role as the eccentric Cosmo Kramer on the iconic sitcom "Seinfeld," made a rare public appearance this past Sunday, marking the first time he has been photographed in two years. The 76-year-old actor was spotted walking through West Hollywood, California, in a series of photos that were obtained by Page Six.

Despite the sunny weather, Richards chose to dress in a black jacket, dark jeans, and boots, appearing to be alone during the outing. This rare sighting comes after a long period of seclusion from the public eye, with his last notable appearance being the premiere of "Unfrosted" in May 2024. That event marked his first red carpet appearance in eight years and was held to support his "Seinfeld" co-star Jerry Seinfeld.

Richards has remained largely out of the spotlight since 2006, when he infamously unleashed a stream of racial slurs at hecklers during a comedy show at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. The incident, which had a lasting impact on his career and public image, was revisited in his 2024 memoir, "Entrances and Exits." In the book, Richards recalled a person from the balcony calling out, “You’re not funny. We don’t think you’re very funny!,” which he said triggered him.

In his memoir, Richards expressed regret over the incident, writing, “Of course, looking back at all, I wish I had just agreed with him.” He added, “He went low and I went even lower. We both ended up at the bottom of the barrel.”

The comedian admitted that the heckler’s comment haunted him, as it touched on his deepest fear — not being funny. He wrote, “Later, I’ll come to realize that all of this, everything he said, is me. His voice is my voice. This is all ME going on. My inferiority sets in. My anger erupts.”

Richards also shared that while his "Seinfeld" co-stars — Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus — reached out to him after the incident, he felt embarrassed and concerned about the mess spilling onto them.

In May 2024, Richards revealed he had secretly battled prostate cancer in 2018 and underwent surgery to remove his entire prostate. “It had to be contained quickly,” he told People. “I had to go for the full surgery. If I hadn’t, I probably would have been dead in about eight months.”

Richards shared that his motivation to fight the illness came from his young son, Ben, whom he shares with his wife, Beth Skipp. “I thought, ‘Well, this is my time. I’m ready to go,’” he told the outlet of his initial feelings after getting diagnosed with cancer. “But then my son came to mind just a few seconds later, and I heard myself saying, ‘I’ve got a 9-year-old, and I’d like to be around for him. Is there any way I can get a little more life going?’”

In addition to Ben, Richards has a daughter, Sophia, with his ex-wife, Cathleen Lyons.
